Why is this important?
Suicide is a devastating issue, particularly for older Australians, who are at disproportionate risk of suicide. In 2023, Queenslanders aged over 65 years accounted for almost 20 per cent of suspected suicides. Providing students with the skills to respond effectively to people experiencing crisis ensures Queensland graduates are better equipped to support the mental health and wellbeing of those most at risk.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Queensland Government to reduce suicide rates across the state and strengthen the capacity of communities and workforces to respond to crisis, distress and mental health challenges.
What we are doing?
We are investing in free suicide prevention training for up to 50 eligible Queensland students by sponsoring students to undertake the ‘Respond to People in Crisis and at Risk of Suicide’ skill set.
To reduce barriers to undertaking study and to support their learning, students may be able to claim reimbursement for eligible study-related costs on completion of the course, up to a maximum of $190.
About the skill set
The skill set includes two accredited units of study:
- CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide
- CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations
These units of study may contribute credits towards a further qualification. Please contact TAFE Queensland for further details about Recognition of Prior Learning.
- The training is delivered online for two hours per week, over 8 weeks.
- The training will begin Thursday 9 October 2025, and finish 27 November 2025.
- The training will be delivered Thursdays 1.30pm-4pm via Zoom, with flexible playback options.
Eligibility
The free suicide prevention training is available to:
- Students enrolled in the following TAFE Queensland courses:

- People working in the aged care sector can also apply.
To find out more about the training or to register here. Once the 50 places are filled enrolments will close.
How does this support reform?
This initiative supports whole-of-system reform, including:
- The Every life suicide prevention plan includes a priority action to develop the capacity and capability of the suicide prevention system workforce.
- The Shifting minds strategic plan includes a priority to build a skilled, well-resourced and sustainable workforce, including the lived experience and peer workforces and an action to develop, grow and support a peer workforce across different contexts and environments.
